Travis Morrow, President
Travis Morrow began his career in self storage as a finance intern for National Self Storage. After a two-year activation with the Arizona Army National Guard, Mr. Morrow rejoined National Self Storage as the Consulting Division Manager. In January 2006, Mr. Morrow was promoted to Vice President of the company. He is responsible for the acquisition, development, operations, and growth of National Self Storage into the future. Mr. Morrow also stays active within state associations, currently serving as a director on both the Arizona and Nevada Self Storage Associations. Travis Morrow received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Finance from the University of Arizona, Tucson in May 2003. Mr. Morrow is the designated real estate broker for National Self Storage Management, Inc. in Arizona.
David King, Vice President
David is the Vice President of Self Storage for Wentworth Property Company, LLC., focusing on all things related to self-storage. This includes the asquisition of existing facilities, ground up development, conversions and joint ventures. Dave has over 10 years experience in the self-storage industry. He joined WPC in 2015 to help drive the company's desire to grow into self-storage. Before joining WPC, Dave was the Vice President of Business Development at Westport Properties, Inc., a self-storage owner/operator out of Irvine, CA. His overall background has been in sales and business development, with a proven track record of generating a variety of new partnerships. These partnerships have assisted in the closing of multiple transactions in various states across the country. Dave is an Arizona native and lives in Phoenix with his wife and son. He attended the University of Arizona, serves as the Vice President of AZSA, and is a Life Member of the Executive Council Charities, a non-profit corporation dedicated to providing grants to other non-profit groups that focus on helping the youth of Arizona reach their full potential as productive, caring and responsible citizens. In his spare time, Dave enjoys playing golf, flly fishing, traveling and spending time with family and friends.
Bill Alter, Director
Bill Alter is Managing Director of the Self Storage Group at Rein & Grossoehme Commercial Real Estate With 30 years of experience in commercial real estate specializing in the acquisition and disposition of self storage investment properties, Bill has helped countless owners of storage facilities, including individuals, partnerships, public institutions, pension funds and lenders achieve their goals for their self storage properties. He has provided consulting services, assisting clients with feasibility and buy/sell decisions.
Mr. Alter is a founding board member of the Arizona Self Storage Association and currently serves on the executive committee. In 2008, he was recognized with AZSA's Self Storage Pioneer Award for his significant contributions to the association since its inception in 1996 and his continued dedication to the professionalism of the self storage industry in Arizona. James Appleton, Communications Chair/Technology Chair/Director
James has worked with Chris Rudel at The Rudel Company, Inc in Commercial Real Estate Sales & Leasing and Self Storage Property Management since early 2007 and has also played an active role in technology related decisions since that time with AZSA. James also has a successful web design firm, Barking Tuna Web design, that provides Web Design, Graphic Design, Social Marketing, and Search Engine Optimization for small to medium businesses. James currently works for MiniCo and is responsible for advertising sales for MiniCo’s full range of periodicals for the self-storage industry including the company’s flagship publication, Mini-Storage Messenger, as well as the Self-Storage Almanac, Self-Storage Expense Guidebook, Self-Storage Canada, Self-Storage Now!, Self-Storage Buyer’s Guide, and others.
Paul Bates, Director
Paul Bates hails from Maine, where he owned and operated three new car dealerships, a Yamaha & sporting goods store and a bowling alley. He came to Arizona in 1995 and obtained his real estate broker's license, becoming one of the top-producing sellers of residential and commercial properties in Gila County.
Paul believes in giving back to his community. Paul has been a member and past president of the Central Arizona Board of Realtors in Payson and has served on various committees for that Board. He currently serves as a director on the Chamber of Commerce board, the Mogollon Health Alliance board, the Payson Senior Citizen board, and the Rim Guidance board. A charter member and past president of the Rim Country Rotary Club, Paul remains very involved in their diversified outreach, mentoring and fund raising projects.
Among other things, Paul currently is the owner of Rim Country Self-Storage & U-Haul since August 2004, the newest facility in Payson, which he recently expanded to include additional storage and RV parking space. Paul has been a member of AZSA for almost six years, and has served as AZSA's Rim Country Regional Chairperson for five years. He sees an important role for the Association in rural Arizona, and strongly believes in rural representation on AZSA's board.
Paul holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Maine. He currently lives in Payson with his partner, Joy, where they enjoy walking their black labs, reading, hunting, fishing, traveling, dining out and relaxing at the movies.
Poppy Behrens, Trade Show Chair/Director
Poppy is the Publisher of MiniCo, Inc. publishers of Mini-Storage Messenger, Self-Storage Now, the Self-Storage Almanac and Development Handbook, Mobile Self-Storage Magazine, RV & Boat Storage Today, and Self-Storage Canada. Since joining MiniCo in 2000, Poppy has become actively involved in the self-storage community through serving, among other appointments, on the trade show program development committee for the Arizona Self Storage Association. Prior to joining MiniCo, she was the Associate Editor of Newport Beach magazine and worked as a freelance writer since 1990. Poppy is also a member of the American Society of Business Publication Editors.
Don Favreau, Director
Don Favreau is an Area Manager for Uncle Bob’s Self-Storage, managing stores in Arizona and Colorado. He began his career with Shurgard in 1987 and has continued in and around the self-storage industry ever since. With Shurgard, Don was responsible for West Coast operations and was involved with Shurgard of Europe. He worked for MiniCo as they introduced the self-storage concept in Hong Kong. Don got his BA from BYU and his MBA from University of Phoenix.
Diane Gibson, Director
Diane is the owner of Cox’s Armored Mini Storage Management, Inc., a management company specializing in mini storage management. She currently manages 18 storage facilities and is a part of the ownership interest. Her professional experience also includes 28 years in property management and accounting with various inter-related companies of a developer in the Phoenix area. Diane serves as AZSA Secretary and sits on the Executive, Membership and Trade Show Committees.
Korey Hanson, Director
Korey Hanson first joined Professional Self Storage Management in 2004 and started out as an Area Manager overseeing 18 self storage properties, mainly in Arizona. In 2007, Korey was promoted to Director of Operations while the company was managing 31 facilities. He played a major role in the growth of the company over this time and created the marketing plans and training programs that are still being used today. He has had direct involvement with the opening of 6 new storage facilities from the early stages of development through stabilization and contributed greatly to their success. Currently he oversees all day to day operations for 56 Professional Self Storage Management properties located throughout Arizona, California, New Mexico, Wyoming, Texas, Colorado and Arkansas. In addition to operations he also focuses his efforts on new management acquisitions, client relations and revenue management. In 2012 he became a Partner in Argus Professional Storage Management, a new self storage management company operating jointly with Professional Self Storage Management. Korey graduated from the University of Arizona in 2002 with a Bachelor of Science in Business Management. He is a native of Tucson, Arizona and is married with two young children.
Andrew Kelly, Director
AZSA Owner/Operator & Associate/Vendor member, began his storage career at National Self Storage in 1992. His positions over 12 years ranged from Area Manager, Head of Consulting, Commercial Property Management of Office Warehouse, and he finished his career at National as Chief Operating Officer. He managed daily operations of the company's 90 storage facilities, commercial properties and personnel. Andy ventured out on his own in 2004 and started A B Kelly Realty (Self Storage and Commercial Property Management) and Sierra Self Storage Consulting, a full service national and international company specializing in operations training and market / feasibility studies. Andy has been the Southern Arizona membership liaison for AZSA for many years. He graduated from University of Arizona with a Bachelor of Science Degree in 1985.
Martin Lorch, Treasurer
Martin is president and co-founder of BPI Capital Management, Inc., a real estate firm specializing in self-storage development, management and brokerage, amongst other types of real estate. He has been a real estate broker since 1982. He is also co-owner of Arizona Storage Inns, a leading Arizona based self-storage company and a real estate broker. Richard Marmor, Legal & Legislative Chair/Director
Richard has been in the storage industry in the Phoenix area for over 30 years. He was the founding president of AZSA, and is its lobbyist at the Arizona Legislature where he authored many of the self-storage industry's laws. An attorney, is also the creator of most of AZSA’s forms. He is a regular speaker at AZSA educational workshops around the state, and his articles appear regularly in AZSA’s newsletter Behind Closed Doors.
Chris Rudel, Director
Chris has built, owned and operated self-storage facilities in the Phoenix area for over 40 years. He has been involved in real estate development for 45 years in the Arizona and Nevada markets. He is a licensed general contractor, real estate broker and has served as president of AZSA.
Tarik Williams, Director
Tarik Williams is a life-long resident of Arizona. He was raised to understand that nothing in life is free, but that quite the reverse is true. From a young age he spent many summer days and occasional school holidays with his father and brothers sweeping out storage units, tying reinforcing steel, and running screw guns. Through these experiences with his father, he developed a love for construction and chose to attend Arizona State University where he graduated Magna Cum Laude with a Bachelor’s of Science in Construction Management and a Minor in Business. He paid for his own schooling with scholarships and working as a real estate broker, during which time he was awarded Realtor Magazine’s ‘30 Under 30’. He took a two-year hiatus from his studies to serve as a missionary for his church in Spain where he learned to understand and appreciate the Spanish people and their language.
After graduation, Tarik partnered with his father at TLW Construction and is now serving his 14th year as vice president and also helps to manage a sister steel company - Caliber Metal Buildings. During this time, Tarik has shared responsibility for the design and construction of roughly 4 million square feet of self-storage and through this experience has developed a reputation as one who understands his trade and takes special interest in the operability and functionality of the finished product. Tarik has developed three storage projects on his own account resulting in valuable knowledge gained from the owner’s perspective which he is able to implement in his construction client’s projects.
In his spare time, Tarik enjoys coaching Little League Baseball, backpacking with the Boy Scouts, and camping with his wife, Jamie, and seven children (yes…seven).
Ted Williams, Director
Ted has been a licensed general contractor in the State of Arizona since 1980 and holds licenses in several adjoining states. His first self storage facility was built in 1981 and he has constructed more that seventy self storage and RV storage facilities in Arizona, California, Colorado and Texas, totaling several million square feet. He is also a principle owner of the Maricopa Self Storage in Maricopa, Arizona. Mr. Williams holds a B.S. degree in accounting from Brigham Young University and was also a Certified Public Accountant. He has participated in leadership with the Boy Scouts of America at various levels. He is a member of the Mesa West Rotary Club and has served as Club President, Rotary District Governor, RI president’s personal representative for three RI presidents and as Assistant General Chairman for the Rotary International Task Force on Families. He currently serves AZSA as its Treasurer and on the Tradeshow Committee.
Anne Mari DeCoster, Executive Director
AZSA's Executive Director since 2010, Anne has been a business consultant and writer since the 1980s. With 10 years experience in self-storage, Anne's work in private industry includes defense, transportation, real estate, and energy. In the public arena, Anne has worked on every level of government (local, state, and federal), in every branch (executive, legislative, and judicial), on projects varying from investment strategy to technological R&D to national security.
