Gate Scam Alert: Be Aware!

Tips & Suggestions,

StorQuest Self Storage

With storage facilities having a new and improved reputation as a lucrative real estate investment, we have a new challenge: scams.

If your facility hasn’t been visited yet by a “gate inspector,” it is likely you will be. A few facilities in the valley have encountered a man coming in and insisting that their gate is out of compliance and strict laws are going to be enforced starting this year.  He immediately starts asking questions about your gate and begins to cite violations. He then pulls out a gate safety checklist and begins to grade your gate with a pass or fail result. When he visited my property, I politely assured him that our gate was in perfect working order and asked him to leave his checklist.

The checklist is called Swing and Slide Gate operator UL 325 and ASTM F2200 Site Planning Safety Checklist. After some investigating, I found it on the website for Liftmaster. There was nothing on their website to suggest that this manufacturer is offering any untrue information. Rather, they are just offering safety tips and their own guidelines for proper installation.

Bottom line, don’t be fooled into writing a compliance check!
